Torres grabs brace for Spain

World champions Spain began the defence of their European Championship title with a thumping 4-0 win over outclassed Liechtenstein in Vaduz.

• Torres: I'm feeling good

Fernando Torres struck twice while David Villa and substitute David Silva were also on the scoresheet as the world's top-ranked side, who this summer added the World Cup to the European crown they won two years ago in Austria and Switzerland, kicked off their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign in impressive style.

Vicente del Bosque's side, who have now won 52 of 57 matches since 2006, scored two brilliant goals in the first half through Torres and Villa but could have had many more after cutting open the home defence time and again.

In the opening three minutes Andres Iniesta, scorer of Spain's World Cup-winning goal against Holland, brought a good save out of home goalkeeper Peter Jehle, who soon afterwards kept out a far-post header from the unmarked Villa.
It took the Spanish 18 minutes to make the breakthrough, with Torres getting on the scoresheet with a fantastic finish. Torres underwent two knee operations in the first four months of the year and also suffered an adductor injury in July's World Cup final, and his club side Liverpool do not expect the 26-year-old to be back to peak fitness for another month.

However, the former Atletico Madrid man showed little sign of rustiness as he latched on to Iniesta's through-ball and dinked a pinpoint chip over Jehle.

That was Torres' 25th international goal and first since June having failed to net in South Africa, and he had a chance to notch a second in the 20th minute following another incisive Iniesta pass, but this time Jehle was able to block.

Jehle was left with no chance six minutes later, though, as Villa made it 2-0 with a 25-yard blockbuster that flew into the roof of the net.

That goal took Villa to 43 goals in his 66th appearance for his country, leaving him one behind the national record of Raul, whose tally came from 102 matches.

Villa should really have equalled the former Real Madrid forward's mark in the 37th minute but he was denied by Jehle after being put clean through - one of many chances the new Barcelona man had to etch his name in the record books.

After Liechtenstein - ranked 140 places below Spain in the FIFA rankings - had finally given Iker Casillas something to do, Franz Burgmeier trying his luck from outside the box, Spain created another good chance just before the break but this time Torres saw his shot blocked by Jehle's knees.
The visitors suffered a slight scare at the start of the second half when Casillas was forced to race out of his area to nick the ball away from a Liechtenstein forward, with Philippe Erne then firing well wide from long distance with the Spanish goal gaping.

It was all Spain after that, though. Xabi Alonso and Gerard Pique both won corners out of Jehle before Torres made it 3-0 in the 54th minute, picking up Cesc Fabregas' pass before driving a low shot inside the near post.

Almost immediately Torres made way for Silva, who needed just five minutes before making it 4-0.

Sergio Busquets took advantage of some dismal Liechtenstein defending to pick out the unmarked Silva inside the area, and the Manchester City new boy, like Torres before him, beat Jehle inside his near post.

Spain continued to create chance after chance and Villa brought two fine saves out of Jehle while Pedro Rodriguez fired two late efforts just wide.

Villa also contrived to hit the crossbar in injury-time with the goal gaping after being set up by Silva as Del Bosque's men had to settle for just the four goals in the end.

Nevertheless, the win gives the world champions the perfect start to their Euro 2012 Group I qualifying campaign and also puts them in good shape for Tuesday's mouth-watering friendly against Argentina.
Torres: I'm feeling good

Fernando Torres insists he is feeling better all the time after continuing his quest for full fitness with a brace of goals as Spain started their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Liechtenstein.

The former Atletico Madrid man, who was substituted soon after netting his second, said after the game: "I feel better every day after the injury, with more rhythm and the goals give me a lot of confidence.''

Torres' double saw him move onto 26 goals for his country, level with legendary Real Madrid striker Emilio Butragueno in fifth place in the all-time list.

"It's always nice to be on these lists and it makes me proud to be here and to continue scoring, although the most important thing is the three points and that we've played,'' Torres added.

Torres is still 17 goals behind strike partner David Villa, who took his own international tally to 43 with a thunderous 25-yard drive to put Spain 2-0 up against an outclassed Liechtenstein side.

Villa is now just one behind the national record of 44 held by Raul, although the Barcelona forward had enough chances this evening to pass the new Schalke striker's mark - notably in stoppage time when he somehow managed to hit the crossbar with the goal gaping.

The former Valencia frontman was unconcerned about not being able to break the record though, telling Spanish television channelTelecinco: "It will come. It's a shame because it was the final minutes but the goals will arrive. I hope that I stay in the national team for many years.

"The team have done well. We've played good football and the result was good. We know that our opponents were going to try to keep it tight at the back and it was going to be difficult to open them up. Fortunately Torres scored early.''

Italy vs Slovenia

Italy vs Slovenia
September 6 could be a historical day for hosts Italy who will welcome Slovenia in their 8th UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying match in Group C.

Unbeaten Italy have the wonderful opportunity of sealing qualification to the Euros in Fiorentina where Cesare Prandelli used to coach as La Viola’s manager. In an interview with Rai Sport, the Italy boss was quoted as saying:

“Qualifying for Euro 2012 in Florence would be magic, a small dream that would become reality.”

Azzurri supporters, however, are hoping to be treated with a much better performance than what was showcased against the Faroe Islands last Friday. A strike by Cassano gave the Italians a narrow victory in a game they should have won comfortably.

Expect Slovenia to put up a strong display on Tuesday as things remain extremely tight between the second and fifth positions. As things stand, Slovenia have only 11 points from 8 matches.

Serbia follow behind with the same number of points, Estonia have 10 and Northern Ireland have 9. Slovenia and Estonia have played one more game than Italy, Serbia and Northern Ireland, though.

Russia faces tough test vs. Ireland in Euro 2012
Sept. 4, 2011, 10:03 a.m. CDT
Associated Press
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia needs a victory when it hosts Ireland on Tuesday to ensure it remains atop the tightest qualifying group for the European Championship.

Russia was criticized for wasted opportunities in Friday's 1-0 win over a young Macedonian team and faces a much tougher test against the Irish, who have not conceded a goal in their last six matches.

Russia is two points ahead of Ireland and Slovakia, which share second place with 14 points from seven games in Group B.

"It will be a different match compared to the one with Macedonia," Russia and Arsenal midfielder Andrei Arshavin said. "The Irish players will frequently use long passes. But at the same time they are not accustomed to playing on the artificial pitch."

Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given considers that to be "an unfair advantage."

"They're the only team in Europe who play on a plastic pitch," he said.

Russia coach Dick Advocaat was satisfied with the result on Friday and especially how his team played in the second half.

"We saw how we should play," Advocaat said. "We will have a difficult game on Tuesday — we need points."

Russia will have center back Sergei Ignashevich returning from suspension but will be without suspended midfielder Igor Denisov.

"He's an excellent player, a combative defensive midfielder," Advocaat said of Denisov. "But we have other players who can play in this position."

Ireland has a growing injury list ahead of the crunch match, with John O'Shea the latest player to pull out.

The versatile Sunderland defender withdrew because of calf and hip strains to join left back Kevin Kilbane (back) and striker Shane Long (calf) on the injury list.

Winger Aiden McGeady and striker Kevin Doyle are struggling for full match fitness after lengthy layoffs while Given is nursing a back problem.

Ireland drew 0-0 with Slovakia on Friday, a blow to its qualification hopes but assistant coach Marco Tardelli remains confident.

"We played against a very tough team — their world ranking is 10 places before us and they are in the same position as us in the table," he said. "The result was not very good for us, but we played very well in the second half. We missed three or four good opportunities and I think it is possible to go to Russia and play to win."

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni is not expected to change his tactics in Moscow.

"No panic. There might be one day of disappointment after Slovakia, but then the confidence comes back," Trapattoni said.

"If we create the same opportunities, it's vital that we take them. I would have been more disappointed against Slovakia if we had not created chances but now, we need to score.

Russia is expected to have a sold-out crowd of 83,000.

Slovakia is at home against Armenia and also needs a victory as it will host Russia in October. Armenia upset Slovakia 3-1 in Yerevan last October and will try to prove it was not an accident.

Stephen McManus's dramatic late winner against Liechtenstein, coupled with the Czechs' surprise home defeat to Lithuania, have put the Scots in a favourable position in Group I. Germany vs Austria

With the Champions League now over, the focus now turns to European Championship Qualifying. In a Group A clash, Germany will take on Austria as the favorite on Friday and will be close to securing their place with a win.

Germany vs Austria

It's been a tough start for the Austrians in the group, as they've won two, lost two and drawn one through their first five encounters. However they have been defeated in their last two games 2-0 in qualifying.

Granted the competition lately has been tough. Turkey and Belgium are two rising European powerhouses full of young talent and have made any chance of moving on tough for Austria at this point.

In Group A, the Austrians now sit fourth out of six teams, with Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan the only two squads behind them.

With Turkey, Belgium and upcoming opponent Germany alongside the Austrians in their group, the wins have to start coming now.

What a monumental task that will be, considering the Germans have been absolutely dominating the competition so far in qualifying.

They have a perfect 5-0 record and are now five points clear at the top of their group (like Group G topping England who face Switzerland). Through five games, Germany has scored 17 times while only allowing one goal. Amazing stuff!

The Germans have been active in international friendlies as well, having beaten Uruguay 2-1 on May 29. Scorers were Mario Gomez and Andre Schurrie as coach Joachim Low tested some lesser-used players out.

Germany simply too good for Austria

It should come as little surprise that Germany is the clear favorite in the soccer odds. Bodog has installed the team at -275 to grab the victory.

Austria is the overwhelming underdog at +650 odds to score a shock win. A draw would also be a surprise result, priced at +350 to cash at the soccer betting window.

Even though the Germans are flying high in their group, do not expect them to give anything less than a top-notch effort in Friday's game in Austria.

That spells trouble for Dietmar Constantini's side given the sheer quality that Germany possesses throughout its entire squad.

From top to bottom, Germany has tremendous talent, starting with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. He was in great form for Schalke during the season and has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich among others.

Then we've got Bastian Scweinsteiger, Philip Lahm and Real Madrid stars Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil. Oh, why not throw Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski and Thomas Muller in the mix as well?

Armed with a great mix of young talent and experienced contributors, these Germans will continue to pile up the victories for years to come.

Marc Janko meanwhile is the captain and the one to watch for Austria. The FC Twente striker had a brilliant season domestically, scoring a total of 14 goals in 29 appearances during the 2010/11 campaign.

Ranked 73rd in the world, the Austrians are however just not at the same level as the formidable Germans and it'd be a big shock if they can even get a point out of Wednesday's game.
