It’s the London derby this Boxing Day as Arsenal welcome champions Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners faced familiar criticism of bottling up in big games following their 1-0 loss to Manchester United last fortnight. Skipper Cesc Fabregas admitted his side had to start getting results in these big games and this one against Chelsea affords the Gunners that chance. Manager Arsene Wenger continues to be without Abou Diaby and Thomas Vermaelen, but Nicklas Bendtner could be back for this one.

Meanwhile the enforced break that saw their game against Man United postponed will have done Chelsea a world of good as they prepare to bounce back from a couple of woeful months. Chelsea are currently 4^th on the league table with 31 points from 17 games. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that the bleak period is over and that his side is ready to bounce back. They will be boosted by the return of Frank Lampard for this game after his absence for the last 8 weeks through injuries.

The Spurs are tied on points with Sunderland, but have secured the 5^th spot thanks to a superior goal difference. Manager Harry Redknapp will be concerned with their inconsistent form in the domestic competition although their European form has been excellent. Rafael van der Vaart is all set to return after missing out for three weeks with a hamstring injury. Younes Kaboul is also fit as is William Gallas although he may not start this game.

Meanwhile Aston Villa have had a bad season and are sitting on the 15^th spot on the league table with 20 points from 17 games played so far. Manager Gerard Houllier knows his job is on the line unless results materialize soon. Houllier is also bracing for the exit of Stephen Ireland in January and also for a big money bid for Ashley Young although he has insisted the latter will not be allowed to leave.

ewcastle United will be vying for another high profile scalp when they welcome Manchester City in their next premier league match on Boxing Day.

The Magpies have already beaten Arsenal and Liverpool and came very close to snatching all three points against Chelsea early this season. With a new manager in Alan Pardew, fans will be hopeful that their side will show the same hunger and determination that saw them beat Liverpool in their last match.

Newcastle have already tasted defeat to Manchester City early this season though it needed a 75th minute winner by substitute Adam Johnson. Though Newcastle are sitting pretty inside the top half of the table, Pardew will be aware that just a couple of defeats on the trot could pull them into a relegation battle.

Manchester City on the other hand will be looking to put pressure on both Chelsea and Arsenal by climbing to second in the league table. The Citizens are level on points with Arsenal though they have played a game more than their nearest rivals.

Manchester United will be looking to maintain their excellent home form and hold on to their two point lead at the top of the table by registering another victory when they welcome Sunderland on Sunday.

United have the best home form in the league so far, winning eight of the nine games played at Old Trafford and dropping just two points. While Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City are all struggling for consistency, United have won their last three games to go two points clear of second placed Arsenal with a game in hand over their nearest rivals.

Sunderland on the other hand have struggled on their travels, winning just one of their nine games though a return of eight points should satisfy manager Steve Bruce.

The Black Cats have put up some excellent performances in their last few games to climb to sixth in the league table, emerging as possible contenders for a place in the Europa League next season though Bruce reiterated that a top half finish remains his main aim this season.

The Black Cats came close to snatching a shock victory over United at the Stadium of Light early this season but had to settle for a point. Sunderland have a fairly decent record away to United, managing to avoid defeat on two of their last five visits to Old Trafford.

Fulham will be hoping to collect all three points and move away from the relegation zone when they take on bottom huggers West Ham this Boxing Day.

Fulham manager Mark Hughes has been left frustrated by a string of draws that sees his side placed 17^th on the league table with 16 points from 17 games played so far. The Cottagers’ last game against Liverpool was called off due to freezing weather conditions, which means the players and the manager, have had some time to reflect on their current position. Coupled with their position, Hughes will also have to deal with interest from Liverpool in Clint Dempsey in January.

Meanwhile West Ham settled for a 1-1 draw against Blackburn last week, which meant they continued to languish at the bottom of the table. Ryan Nelsen has given Blackburn the lead in the 51^st minute, but Junior Stanislas equalized in the 74^th minute to rescue a point. This game was the first of the three games that manager Avram Grant has been given by the Hammers’ board to save his job. He will hope to build on this performance and collect all three points this Sunday, which would be the perfect Christmas gift for fans.
