OL could not build upon their midweek win over Boulogne as they were held to a draw by Monaco on Sunday night. Michel Fernandes Bastos gave Lyon the lead in the 22nd minute, curling home a free kick after defender Anthony Reveillere had been fouled by Monaco’s Nicolas Nkolou. Park Chu Young responded for Monaco thirteen minutes later, volleying home the equaliser after some nice work from Nene, Traore and Puygrenier.
Jeremy Toulalan made a late substitute appearance for OL, who also had second half efforts from defender Cris and Argentine forward Cesar Delgado saved by Monaco keeper Stephane Ruffier. With Bordeaux winning their league game against Lorient, the gap between Claude Puel’s men and Les Girondins has increased to a whopping ten points.
Montpellier are equal on points with Lyon going into this game, but Rene Girard’s men do have a game in hand. They were in second place a week ago but have slipped to fifth because of consecutive home defeats at the hands of Nancy and Bordeaux.
The game against Nancy on Saturday was played behind closed doors and the visitors broke the deadlock through Djamel Bakar’s 32nd minute effort. Pascal Berenguer added the second for Nancy seven minutes later. Montpellier had nearly two thirds of possession, but failed to convert it into goals.
Will Lyon be able to usher in Christmas on a winning note? Or will promoted Montpellier shock Les Gones at Stade Gerland and bring an end to their own run of defeats?
