News:
Chelsea will be focused on retaining pole position in Group E when they travel to Valencia in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening.

After beating Bayer Leverkusen last time out, Andre Villas-Boas' men sit top of their group and two points clear heading into the second-round Mestalla clash.

The return of summer signing Juan Mata to his former club just weeks after arriving at Stamford Bridge is expected to bring added spice to the encounter.

But there will be no room for sentiment, with Valencia coach Unai Emery determined to secure a home victory.

He said: "We know all about Chelsea but also know that we are a very strong side, even more so here at Mestalla.

"We are only focused on ourselves and want to produce a great game and a victory for our fans. Tomorrow every player wearing blue [including Mata] will be our enemy."

Villas-Boas added of Mata's chances of facing his old employers: "Different players react differently when coming back home or to an emotional place.

"You just have to wait and see if [Mata] is going to be involved."

The Blues recovered from their defeat to Manchester United last weekend when they thrashed promoted Swansea 4-1, while Valencia were seen off 1-0 at Sevilla - their first defeat of the season.

Team news

Blues boss Villas-Boas must decide whether to recall Frank Lampard to his line-up for the Spanish trip.

Lampard has started the last two matches on the bench and it seems unthinkable he will not be in the XI at the Mestalla.

Daniel Sturridge is expected to be fit after a knee injury, Ramires is available after missing the Blues' opener against Leverkusen through suspension, but Romelu Lukaku is ineligible and Alex, Paulo Ferreira and Josh McEachran did not travel to Spain.

Valencia midfielder David Albelda bruised his back against Barcelona and did not face Sevilla at the weekend, while Mehmet Topal tore a shoulder muscle in the goalless draw with Genk last time out.

News:
Tomorrow the highest level of club football, The European Champions League group stage, comes to Northern London for the 14th consecutive season. Arsenal have been in the Champions League since 1997, and when you realize Arsene Wenger took over the managerial position for the Gunners in October of 1996, and how every gooner nowadays expects Arsenal to be in this stage of the competition, it is an incredible achievement that goes understated much to often. For all the problems and frailties of the Arsenal, and Wenger himself lately, the history is impressive and Wenger deserves the up-most respect no matter what happens in the future, good or bad.
Match Day Two brings Olympiakos FC from Piraeaus, Greece to London. Olympiakos is the most successful club in the history of Greek football, having won 38 domestic titles, 24 Greek Cups, 4 Greek Super Cups, and is one of four clubs that has never been relegated from the first division. Since 1997, Olympiakos has won 13 Greek League titles, only missing the title in 2004 and 2010, while winning five Greeks Cups in the same time period, making them very obviously the most dominant club in Greece for 15 seasons. What is interesting for the club is that despite the unparalleled domestic success, the position of manager is an extremely fickle position.

Managers from 1996-2011
Since Bajevic was manager for 3 long seasons, Olympiakos has employed 19 managers in a span of 12 years. It’s rather incredible to me that a club can be so successful while having a managerial merry-g0-round as building a solid foundation and a sense of stability is generally thought to be a recipe for success, not constant change at the managerial position. Maybe Arsenal do have it wrong after all these years.
Olympiakos have long been present in European competition, debuting against Milan way back in 1959, and celebrated their 200th game in Europe in 2010 against Bordeaux. Their best European campaign has been advancing to the the quarter-finals, which they have accomplished twice in their history, the first in the 98-99 season where they were beaten by Juventus in the Champions League, and the second in the 92-93 season, losing to Atletico Madrid in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. The Greeks are no stranger to English clubs in Europe by now, as they have played West Ham, Tottenham, Newcastle, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal over the years. But in the 26 matches versus English sides, they have only managed 3 wins which were all home matches, against Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool. The Arsenal game they won was against Wenger’s Carling Cup squad in 2010 when the likes of Tom Cruise, Kyle Bartley Fran Merida and Kerrea Gilbert all started for the London club.

Olympiakos (red) v Panathinaikos (green) Feb 21, 2011
I have to admit when researching the player squad for Olympiakos, there was only one or two names that I even recognized. So I had to do some searching for players and playing style and the always excellent Zonal Marking gives some insight.
From that lineup above, Goalkeeper Pardo is now gone and replaced with Nikos Papadopoulos. From the four defenders, Raul Bravo has departed, and midfielder Riera has also left them, so clearly this is not going to be the lineup seen tomorrow against Arsenal. I would urge you to click on the link to Zonal Marking to get a better idea of how Olympiakos sets up and plays as I geniunely cannot add more to what Michael Cox writes.
Arsenal team new is interesting, but all rather discouraging if I am honest. We all know of the long term injuries to Abou Diaby, Jack Wilshere and Thomas Vermaelen, and there has been no news on Yossi Benayoun’s thigh injury nor Johan Djourou’s hamstring issue so we can assume they are out for this match. Adding to the injury list from the Bolton game is Theo Walcott who’s knee is not 100%, as well as Gervinho and Koscielny. Gervinho has a ‘very, very mild’ hamstring issue and Koscielny is out with an ankle problem from a late Reo-Coker tackle on Saturday. Sebastian Squillaci is not completely fit, but ’should be back in the group’ on Friday or Saturday according to Wenger. And if you were thinking that this will give Ignasi Miquel the start, well you could be wrong. Miquel was scheduled to start for the Reserves yesterday but was withdrawn during warm-up, and there is varying reports about why. Young Guns claims he was taking out of the squad due to injury, while Jeorge Bird simply states that he was a late withdrawal and sat in the stands. Injuries are coming quick and fast for Arsenal, as they always seem to do, and it will be interesting to see how Pat Rice sets the starting lineup and manages the squad while Arsene Wenger will be escorted to the stands by UEFA officials once more, serving his touchline ban. My best guess to see on the pitch tomorrow would be:
Szczesny
Sagna Mertesacker Song Gibbs
Frimpong
Arteta Ramsey
Rosicky Van Persie Arshavin
Subs: Flaps, Jenkinson, Santos, Coquelin, Chamberlain, Park, Chamakh
I wonder if Park or Chamberlain might get the start on the wing, but knowing Wenger’s penchant for starting known players (or ‘favorites’ as others would say), I would be surprised if Rosicky doesn’t get the start in this one. Arsenal always do well at home in the Champions League, and despite the weaker lineup, Arsenal should still take the three points in this one. My best guess at the result is an Arsenal win, 3-1.
Come on you Gunners.

News:
AC Milan will aim to build on their draw with Barcelona, when Massimiliano Allegri's side host Czech minnows FC Viktoria Plzen in the UEFA Champions League.

A 2-2 draw at Camp Nou on Matchday One for last season's Serie A winners has set them up nicely in Group H for a campaign in which they are at least expected to reach the knockout stages.

Pavel Vrba's Plzen were also held to a draw in their opening fixture after being forced to settle for a 1-1 share of the points with BATE Borisov.

Vrba will therefore know they cannot afford to treat their trip to the San Siro as merely a special occasion as they aim to avoid a defeat which could mean their Champions Leagueparticipation is as good as over shortly after it began.

"I've watched four of Milan's games, against Napoli and Udinese in particular, and I have garnered some ideas and inspiration," said Vrba.

Ibrahimovic hope

"Naturally, we don't underestimate anyone. This is an important moment in our season."

Milan will be without Gennaro Gattuso due to suspension, while Robinho (toe), Pato (thigh), Kevin-Prince Boateng (hip) and Philippe Mexes (knee) are all unavailable.

Allegri is hopeful Zlatan Ibrahimovic will overcome a thigh injury and Daniele Boneracould feature if he recovers from a bruised rib.

Plzen will be missing goalkeeper Roman Pavlik, who is still recovering after injuring his knee against Rosenborg.

Pavel Horvath, who is his club's most experienced player in Europe, will be making his fourth visit to Italy for a European tie and he has yet to avoid defeat.

Watch CSKA Moscow VS Inter Milan Live Stream Highlights 27 Sept 2011 here. Inter Milan will embark on a trip to the Luzhniky Stadium in Moscow under new manager Claudio Ranieri to get their Champions League hopes back on track against CSKA Moscow.

CSKA Moscow are missing two vital cogs in their wheel in the absence of Russian international goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev and Japanese international attacking midfielder Keisuke Honda. Both are among the very best in Europe and CSKA will miss their services. Most other notable squad members are fit and raring to go.

Inter Milan on the other hand have made a horrifying start to the domestic season as well as the Champions League where they lost their last match against group minnows Trabzonspor. They will be hoping to make a new beginning under their new manager who has a great pool of talent to choose from. A team having the likes of Wesley Sneijder, Lucio, Maicon, Ricky Alvarez, Diego Milito, Christian Chivu and Mauro Zarate are definitely not staying down for too long.

News:
If it were not for the fact that affluent Manchester City are the visitors to the Allianz Arena, people might be marvelling at the wealth of the hosts. Bayern Munich have been particularly successful in developing an appeal that reaches far beyond their region. The hosts in Tuesday's Champions League fixture lie fourth in Deloitte's Football Money League with an income from the 2009-10 season of £264m, about £22m behind Manchester United. Real Madrid and Barcelona are richer still, but Bayern's potential is great.

This, after all, is a club that appeared in the 2010 Champions League final, losing to José Mourinho's Internazionale. It had also taken the trophy with a victory over Valencia in a penalty shoot-out nine years before. If Bayern suffer from any frustration, it lies in the difficulty of recreating the sort of domination that brought them the European Cup three times in a row from 1974 to 1976 when Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller were in the lineup.

Any club of such standing appreciates that current players are always competing with figures from the past, trying to match or even outdo them. Bayern will never suffer from a lack of attention, much as they might like to now and again.

The Arena is routinely filled to its 69,000 capacity, with the total only dipping by 3,000 for the Champions League fixtures where standing is not allowed. It is a place well-suited to dramas, whether concocted or otherwise.

Arjen Robben, having recovered from pelvic inflammation, came off the bench on Saturday and scored the last goal in a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen. When the match was over, though, the Dutchman could not restrict himself to plain happiness. "My muscles are aching all over," he said, adding that he would need a "recovery period".

Robben, when fit, has turned into a regular scorer at Bayern. The club, with players like him on the staff, has been exercising its will in recent years. Bayern have been champions of Germany on 22 occasions, but the pace has been increasing, with seven of the titles coming since 2000.

Despite that, no one can protest that the team goes unchallenged. Indeed Bayern had the small inconvenience of a Champions League qualifier, in which they beat Zürich home and away, because they finished third last season in a Bundesliga won by Borussia Dortmund.

There have been few lapses from a side managed by Jupp Heynckes, who was appointed in the summer. The potential impact of the team cannot have gone unnoticed since they opened their Champions League group schedule with an away victory at El Madrigal, where Villarreal had been undefeated in the previous nine fixtures in European competition.

A well-funded Manchester City would not be excused if they felt uneasy about the match with Bayern, but it was hardly the sort of game they would have wished for in the competition immediately after dropping points at home in the 1-1 draw with Napoli.

The sight of Serie A sides to the fore would be cheering for a Champions League that can suffer from a lack of variety. Until the alarm over the European and indeed global economy, it was all but taken for granted that clubs from England and Spain would be in command. Bayern are particularly qualified to call that into question. They have completed nine consecutive games in the Bundesliga and Champions League without conceding a goal. A meeting with Manchester City falls into a different category, though, considering the extent of the sums of money that have been brought to bear at Eastlands.

City will be fully aware that extreme means also increase the determination to do them harm, as millionaire players among the opposition have a chance for 90 minutes to cast themselves as revolutionaries and underdogs. City are slowly getting used to that, but the share of the points with Napoli was an indication that they can be uneasy with the expectations.

Roberto Mancini, the Manchester City manager, was rueful about that result because his side had virtually no cover when the ball was lost in the opposition half and Edinson Cavani ran clear to open the scoring. It is improbable that City will allow Bayern such scope and the atmosphere will be invigorating, but the match in Munich was not the kind of occasion immediately desired by players still acclimatising to the Champions League.

News:
Basel chance for Berba

The depth of United's squad will again be tested on Tuesday night, this time in attack as much as defence as Sir Alex Ferguson ponders who to pick against Basel from five strikers biding their time for an opportunity.

Dimitar Berbatov hopes to again fill the shoes of Wayne Rooney after the latter was ruled out for the second game in a row due to a hamstring injury and the absence of Javier Hernandez - victim of a dead leg at Stoke - will offer a further opportunity to the likes of Michael Owen, Danny Welbeck, Mame Biram Diouf and Federico Macheda.

"He's not playing tomorrow," said Sir Alex, when asked for an update on Rooney.

"It can be difficult to assess a hamstring injury. Obviously we hope we have him back quickly. He did a bit of jogging this morning but that's all. It's difficult to say. [Hernandez's injury] is straightforward, it's a dead leg. He should be ready for next Saturday."

The United manager insisted there's nothing sinister in the fact Chicharito has limped off the field in two consecutive appearances. Ashley Cole's controversial challenge in the Chelsea match was followed by an apparent push by Stoke defender Jonathan Woodgate on Saturday which led to a collision between the Mexican and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

"Saturday was an accident, a complete accident," replied Sir Alex, declining to be drawn on the issue of 'protection' from referees.

If Berbatov is retained from the team that kicked off against Stoke, it will be only his third Champions League start in 2011. His last one was in May's semi-final second leg against Schalke, when amuch-changed side beat the unfancied Germans 4-1. Omitted from the final 18 against Barcelona, the Bulgarian was an unused sub away to Benfica.

"Of course he does," said Sir Alex, when asked if Berbatov still has a big part to play at United. "He's one of our squad members and they all have a part to play in the context of the number of games you have in the Premier League, the Champions League, the League Cup and FA Cup. It's an exhausting season unless you use your squad."

"I don't need to reassure Dimitar. He knows he's a part of the squad and that applies to many players here at this moment in time. Federico Macheda, Mame Diouf and Michael Owen haven't played regularly either but Saturday's game was only our sixth in the league and we've had the Benfica and Leeds matches. So it's still early doors. There's plenty of time."

While forwards were the focus of Sir Alex's team news, he had some bad news at the back in that Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling are also "not available" with groin and ankle problems respectively, while Nemanja Vidic "hasn't started training" since straining his calf.

News:
Real Madrid CF scored six goals without reply when they faced AFC Ajax in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage and will be looking for a similar show of strength when the teams reunite at Santiago Bernabéu.

• The Spanish side opened Group D with a 1-0 win at GNK Dinamo Zagreb, Ángel Di María scoring the only goal and Madrid holding on despite Marcelo's red card. The same night Ajax were held 0-0 by Olympique Lyonnais in Amsterdam.

Previous meetings
• Madrid launched their campaign 12 months ago with a 2-0 home win against Ajax, a Vurnon Anita own goal and Gonzalo Higuaín securing the points.

• The lineups in Madrid on 15 September 2010 were:
Madrid: Casillas, Carvalho, Pepe, Marcelo, Arbeloa, Alonso (L Diarra 83), Di María (León 80), Özil (Canales 88), Khedira, Ronaldo, Higuaín.
Ajax: Stekelenburg, Van der Wiel, Alderweireld, Anita, Ooijer, Enoh, De Jong, Emanuelson, De Zeeuw (Tainio 69), Sulejmani (Eriksen 85), El Hamdaoui.

• Two months later Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Madrid won 4-0 in Amsterdam despite having both Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos sent off in the closing stages. First-half goals from Karim Benzema and Álvaro Arbeloa helped ensure Madrid would finish top of their group for the third time in the last four editions.

Match background
• Before last season Ajax were the dominant force in encounters between the sides; indeed they still have four wins to Madrid's three, with the other match drawn.

• In the 1972/73 European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final, Ajax won 2-1 at home to Madrid then triumphed 1-0 in Spain thanks to Gerrie Mühren's goal.

• Madrid's home record against teams from the Netherlands is W8 D1 L2; the visitors' away record against Spanish sides is W5 D2 L6.

• The Merengues ended a run of six successive last-16 eliminations when they made it through to last season's semi-finals, where they lost 3-1 on aggregate to FC Barcelona thanks largely to a 2-0 first-leg defeat at the Bernabéu. In their 15 participations to date they have never once failed to progress to the knockout rounds.

• Ajax, who are competing in the UEFA Champions League for the tenth time, followed their defeat in Madrid in last season's group stage with a 2-1 loss at AJ Auxerre and a 2-0 victory at AC Milan to finish third in the section.

Team ties
• During four years as a Barcelona player between 1999 and 2003, Frank de Boer faced Madrid nine times in the Liga and UEFA Champions League, winning two, losing two and drawing five.

• In the Dutchman's first year at Barcelona, José Mourinho was an assistant to coach Louis van Gaal.

• De Boer was part of the Ajax side that beat Madrid 1-0 in the group stage in September 1995, missing the 2-0 return victory at the Santiago Bernabéu through injury.

• Gregory van der Wiel was in the Netherlands team that lost 1-0 to Spain in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final in Johannesburg; Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso were on the winning side.

• Van der Wiel and André Ooijer played in the Dutch team that beat Kaká's Brazil 2-1 in last year's World Cup quarter-final in Port Elizabeth.

• Christian Eriksen appeared as a substitute in Denmark's UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying defeat by a Portugal side including Ricardo Carvalho, Pepe, Fábio Coentrão and Ronaldo in October 2010, the latter scoring the final goal in a 3-1 win.

• Nuri Şahin was on loan at Feyenoord from Borussia Dortmund in 2007/08, scoring six goals in 29 matches.

• Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld were in the Belgium side beaten 1-0 at home by a Germany team featuring Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira in the sides' opening UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier in September 2010.

• Nuri was in the Turkey team which lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 to Belgium in Brussels on 10 October 2009, Vertonghen playing for the home side.

• Hamit Altıntop scored in Turkey's 3-2 UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying victory against a Belgium side that included Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in Istanbul on 7 September 2010.

Team News

Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones is out after picking up a hamstring injury in their midweek Carling Cup tie.

Matthew Upson impressive sufficiently against Spurs in midweek to be pushing for a return though Tony Pulis should recall Jonathan Woodgate.

Manchester United forwards Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck will both be pushing for starting slots alongside Wayne Rooney.

Hernandez has made a rapid recovery from the shin injury he sustained in last weekend’s win over Chelsea, while Welbeck returned from a hamstring problem in the midweek Carling Cup success at Leeds.

Chris Smalling (groin) is a doubt, but fellow England defender Rio Ferdinand is set to return from a calf injury.

Match notes

The prospect of travelling to the Britannia Stadium might bring the players of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool out in a cold sweat, but the ground billed as the most fearsome away day in the Premier League has provided three successive victory for Manchester United.

Stoke’s improvement continues apace this season, however, and United can expect their toughest test yet against Tony Pulis’s team. United’s team selection, though, may be affected by next week’s Champions League tie against Basle.

Stat of the game: United have visited Stoke three times in the Premier League and won all three.

Betting: Home 5-1, Away 4-9, Draw 14-5.

Mark Ogden’s prediction: Stoke 1 United 2

This Saturday’s Manchester City v Everton showdown pits the red hot Sky Blues against an opponent which has dominated them in recent years. We are talking about Everton of course, who have emerged victorious 7 out of the past 8 times they have met Man City. Can they repeat against a Man City side that looks destined for title glory.

Everton have been a thorn in Man City’s side for quite a while and with both holding onto streaks, this match should be a cracker
Manchester City v Everton

Manchester City Team News & Stats

Man City’s 7 match winning streak in Premier League football was broken last week against Fulham despite Mancini’s side taking a 2-0 lead. They will hope their unbeaten streak doesn’t snap therefore this week, since they face the team that last beat them in Premier League action back in May of this year. The return of Kolo Toure and debut of Hargreaves will further strengthen an already deep squad. Man City had no problem ousting last years’ Carling Cup winners in league cup action during the midweek with goals from Hargreaves and Balotelli. The Italian manager should return to his usual lineup however after resting most of his starting lineup in that match.

Everton Team News & Stats

Everton have a pretty impressive streak going themselves, having won 4 and draw one of their past 5 matches. That has taken them to 6th position in the league despite having a game in hand. David Moyes has some concerns up front with Victor Anichebe not likely to be fit on matchday and Louis Saha out of form. The West Brom match in the midweek must have take its toll on Everton who scored in the 89th minute to send the match in extra time and Phil Neville’s winner in 104th sees them advancing in the Carling Cup.

Manchester City v Everton Betting Odds / Tips and Prediction:

For those looking to bet on Manchester City v Everton, odds on leading betting site Bet365 are as follows. Manchester City to beat Everton odds is priced at 2/5, the draw is given 7/2 while Everton to beat Manchester City is valued at 15/2. The Man City v Everton fixture at the Etihad Stadium has ended in favor of the Toffees in the last 4 Premier League matches but Man City have won 11 and draw one of their past 12 Premiership matches. Something’s got to give and we can’t help but think that Manchester City will end their bad spell against Everton and win to keep right behind rivals Man United in the league.

Manchester United could be without Wayne Rooney when they welcome Chelsea in one of their most important games of the season on Saturday.
The defending champions could go four points clear at the top of the table if they beat Chelsea this weekend and fans will be desperately praying that their most consistent player this season will be available for selection in a game that could very well decide who will be lifting the title this season. Rooney twisted his ankle in United’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League with manager Alex Ferguson refusing to confirm whether Rooney will be available for the weekend.
Chelsea on the other hand have responded well since crashing out of the Champions League, scoring 13 goals in their last two games including a thumping 7-1 win over Aston Villa last weekend. Manager Carlo Ancelotti will be confident that his side can repeat their performance from early this season and come away with all three points from Old Trafford.

Apart from Rooney, there are no major injury concerns for United while Chelsea will be missing Ricardo Carvalho, Ashley Cole and Branislav Ivanovic who are all out injured.

Arsene Wenger will be hoping to celebrate his 13th anniversary at Arsenal by helping his side register their third straight victory when they welcome Blackburn Rovers in their next match on Sunday. The 59-year old Frenchman became Arsenal's longest serving manager last week and will be keen to mark his achievement by helping his side collect their first trophy in five years. With Arsenal declaring record profits, Wenger has transfer funds available should he require a new player but has revealed that he already has a top class team and will not be signing any new players in the January transfer window just for the sake of getting a new player.
Arsenal go into the match high on confidence following their comfortable 2-0 victory over Olympiakos in their Champions League tie in the midweek. Robin Van Persie opened the scoring late in the second half before Andrei Arshavin wrapped up the points four minutes from the final whistle. Wenger will be facing off against a familiar opponent with Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce keen to continue his good form against Arsenal. Allardyce's Bolton Wanderers side managed to collect points time and again against Arsenal and the 54-year old will be hoping to repeat the performance with Blackburn this weekend.
Blackburn secured only their second win of the season as they staged a come from behind victory over Aston Villa. Gabriel Agbonlahor had given Villa an early lead in the 3rd minute but Christopher Samba equalized midway through the first half before David Dunn wrapped up the points from the penalty spot two minutes before the final whistle.

Tournament: UEFA Champions League 2011
Match: Borussia Dortmund vs Arsenal
Kick Off Time: - 18:45 GMT
Live/Repeat: Live
Date:- 13th September 2011

In the Champions League first week matches we will have German side Borussia Dortmund hosting English Premier League team Arsenal in what should be a really exciting match. Arsenal have began the season totaly out of form and though they are coming into this match on the back of winning against Swansea City on the weeken, they did not appear convincing even playing at the Emirates and Swansea city could have got a point on the day, if luck was with them.

Borussia Dortmund on the other hand are type of a team who tend to play fantastic football and they do have this typical German mentality, combining with the property support and I can see Arsenal in for a rough ride in this match. Arsene Wenger knows that his team ought to get started confidently and get a win in the initially match to ease points off.

“When you appear back when we travelled to Udinese everyone expected us to win the game and we did, we want the exact same against Dortmund.” So says Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, who, not for the 1st time, appears to see items a bit differently to every person else.

Every person expected Arsenal to beat Udinese? Not that I recall – Arsenal’s form was so patchy and ill-disciplined that they appeared to be ripe for early elimination. It was the 8-2 loss at Manchester United that caught everyone by surprise as couple of had expected the Gunners to concede a lot more than 4 or five…

ARSENAL:

Too as Lewandowski, Dortmund have two other Poland internationals in their pool in Jakub Blaszczykowski and Lukasz Piszczek so naturally there was a lot of banter involving Szczesny in the course of the international break.

“They are a very great side and I’ve 3 incredibly good pals who play for them,” the goalkeeper told arsenal.com. “There was a little bit of banter in the national team going on between us. Out of the 3 of them I believe two will probably be playing. The 1 who was loudest will be on the bench I believe!

“All I desire to say is that soon after the game I hope I might be the 1 who comes out on best. They can’t get in my head, I will probably be focused.”

This tiem last year the Gunners strolled to a 6-0 household success over SC Braga, who had been overawed by producing their Champions League debut so Tuesday’s clash could hardly be a lot more distinct

“It might be really important to start the Champions League with a win,” Szczesny added. “I’m confident with the players we have that we can develop on Saturday’s result and ensure that we get the appropriate result on Tuesday.

“Hopefully we can go there and get 3 points at such an exciting venue. There is going to be about 75,000 people today there and it will give us a whole lot of confidence to do that. We’re going to help keep going. I believe we proved on Saturday that it truly is a really excellent side. We put in a very good efficiency, kept a clean sheet and got the 3 points.”

Technique: Wenger is convinced the effort needed to obtain past Udinese to qualify for the Champions League had a negative impact on the Premier League campaign, which reached a 100-year low point when they had been thrashed 8-2 at Manchester United as soon as Samir Nasri had joined Cesc Fabregas by means of the exit door.

The Frenchman was hopeful a positive result in Dortmund would act as a much-needed confidence booster nonetheless. “The Champions League qualifiers had a big impact on our Premier League performances,” he said.

“I believe we had been disturbed by two items – the players who had been not with us and the two Udinese games had an impact on our games against Liverpool and United. We have a huge game on Tuesday against a really massive side. It’s a massive game as well as a likelihood to show what we can do. It is a initially major test.”

Mertesacker wasn’t the only debutant against Swansea as Mikel Arteta, Fabregas’ replacement in the middle of the park, also began and Yossi Benayoun came off the bench, which is where fellow newcomers Park Chu Young and Andre Santos remained. The latter looks a decent bet to create a debut on Tuesday.

Injury update: Thomas Vermaelen and Jack Wilshere are the most missed of the injury absentees, with Abou Diaby and Sebastien Squillaci also in the therapy room. Midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been forced out with an ankle dilemma and Tomas Rosicky hasn’t travelled either simply because of a knee niggle.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND:

Jurgen Klopp’s squad was given a wake-up call from common manager Hans-Joachim Watzke, who is not impressed with already falling 5 points behind Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen.

“We need to go about our small business differently,” he told the Bild newspaper. “We have in the coming days the time and opportunity to bring extra sharpness and aggression into our game.”

Mertesacker was not ready to underestimate them nevertheless. “Dortmund had been the very best team in Germany last year, they do a fantastic job passing the ball and have fantastic players,” he stated.

“It might be tough for us but I know we have rather beneficial players and I’m confident we can get a result. Dortmund are the toughest opponent in our group, so we might be quite happy if we can take something from this match.”

Norwich City vs West Brom
The last time Norwich were in the Premier League it took 14 games before they recorded their first win, so their three matches without victory is nothing to panic about. But back when the fixtures were announced, plenty of Canaries will have earmarked this game as a fine chance to get off the mark. The 20-year-old Declan Rudd will deputise in goal, with John Ruddy out through suspension. West Bromwich, meanwhile, have been better than their record of three defeats suggests. Shane Long is doubtful to make the starting line-up, but Peter Odemwingie should be fit despite missing international duty with Nigeria due to an ankle problem.

Fulham v Blackburn Preview: Steve Kean Ready to Be Judged

PREMIER LEAGUE: CRAVEN COTTAGE, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2011. KICK-OFF: 1600 BST

These two sides have amassed a measly total of just one point from their opening matches this season; a statistic neither manager will be pleased with.

The Fulham manager, Martin Jol, saw his side earn that point from a goalless draw with Aston Villa on the opening day of the season while there have been defeats at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle.

Perhaps it was those two results that prompted the signing of striker Bryan Ruiz from FC Twente for the sum of £10.6 million in the transfer window.

Steve Kean has endured an even worse start, with Blackburn yet to register a single point after starting the season with three straight defeats.

That has resulted in calls for the removal of the Rovers manager from fans frustrated at the lack of progress since their team's narrow relegation escape at the end of last season.

While Fulham have been doing their best to boost their attacking threat, Blackburn's problems have been in defence.

Rather strangely, like Fulham they have played Aston Villa and Wolves, however on both occasions Rovers were on the losing end. Kean's side have also lost to Everton.

There were several new arrivals at Ewood Park in the transfer window as Yakubu, Scott Dann and Simon Vukcevic were recruited and could feature on Sunday.

Key Match-up: Bryan Ruiz v Chris Samba. The forward, Ruiz, arrived at Craven Cottage with a big reputation - and with a big transfer fee. There will be great interest to see whether he can repeat his free-scoring at Fulham. While playing in the Eredivisie for Twente, Ruiz scored 36 goals in 61 games and Jol's team need that firepower. It has been one area where Fulham have struggled in the past, particularly whenever Bobby Zamora is missing. Ruiz is likely to be given a rough ride by Samba. The towering defender remained with Rovers, despite plenty of speculation that he would join Arsenal in the transfer window. The centre-back will be instrumental in helping Rovers try to keep a clean-sheet.

Form Guide: Neither of these sides are in form. It could be argued that Fulham are marginally the better, having at least taken a point from their opening three games this season. In the past two years, the Whites have come off the better, beating Rovers 3-2 last season and 3-0 the year before that. Historically, however, Blackburn edge this battle with 34 victories to Fulham's 26.

Odds: Fulham 4-6, Blackburn 9-2, Draw 13-5

FULHAM
New signing Zdenek Grygera is looking forward to making his Premier League debut for Fulham against Blackburn.

The former Juventus and Ajax defender joined the Whites on transfer deadline day and is expected to slot-in to Jol's squad at right-back.

He told the club's website: "In the short time that I've been at Fulham I must say that everyone, from the players to staff, has been very welcoming. I feel really good and at home already.

"I'm really happy that I'm able to write another page in my career and experience something new. I think that I can bring a lot of experience to the team. I hope that everything will work out well here and that I will be able to provide something to the team.

"After having played for Ajax and Juventus, what's important for me now is to get used to English football and everything that is required from me to play well.

"The opportunity to play in the Premier League is a big thing for me. Now I want to concentrate on being here and doing well for Fulham in the Premier League.

"We've been working with a small group this week as a lot of players are away on international duty. There is a lot of quality in the squad."

Strategy: The new arrivals could mean that Jol is able to change his tactic. Ruiz is expected to become the focal point of their attack while Grygera will solve the problematic right back position. Brede Hangeland and Philippe Senderos will continue their partnership at the back in a 4-4-2 system that relies upon Danny Murphy and Steve Sidwell in the centre of midfield.

Injury Update: Zamora (ankle) could make an appearance from the bench however the game comes too soon for John Arne Riise (groin) while Simon Davies is a long-term casualty with a knee injury.

BLACKBURN
Kean wants fans to forget the last nine months and judge him on what happens from now on after assembling a team he believes can fire Rovers up the table.

Kean's reign at Ewood Park has been difficult, with pressure growing after five wins from 24 league games since his surprise appointment last December.

Rovers head for Craven Cottage without a point after losing the opening three games of the new campaign.

But Kean is confident his side can climb the table after drafting around £11 million of new talent since the last game with Everton ended in a 1-0 defeat.

Dann, Yakubu and Montenegro winger Vukcevic have all arrived in the past two weeks and are set to feature against Fulham.

"I can understand their (fans) frustration with results," said Kean.

"Three games in and we don't have any points on the board. "What I said was bear with us and judge us at the end of the transfer window.

"Now we've got a competitive squad. For a first time in a lot of years there's genuine competition for places at the back.

"We've got different types of players too. There's lots of different combinations and different types of strikers.

"I'm delighted with the squad and I honestly think it's stronger than it was last year.

"I'm very confident we can put points on the board and climb the table quickly."

Strategy: With a game against Arsenal next week, losing is not an option. Rovers simply have to kick-start their season on the banks of the River Thames. While Dann is expected to partner Samba in the centre of defence, fellow newcomers Yakubu and Vukcevic may have to be patient on the substitutes bench.

Injury Update: Morten Gamst Pedersen (hamstring) remains sidelined while Ryan Nelsen (knee) and David Dunn (hamstring) are doubts.

Watch Real Madrid vs Getafe live

Watch Real Madrid vs Getafe live

Watch Real Madrid against Getafe on the Spanish League Primera at 20:00 GMT

Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka admits Jose Mourinho's side cannot afford to drop points to weaker teams in future
Karanka, speaking as Mourinho seeks an official explanation from UEFA for the five-match ban he was handed last week, claims Madrid will continue to fight for La Liga until all hope is gone.

Madrid are in action at home to Getafe on Tuesday, but with just three rounds of the season remaining, the writing is on the wall for Mourinho's side, who are eight points behind leaders Barcelona.
Nevertheless, a win at home in Tuesday's all-Madrid clash, will leave Barca needing a point at Levante on Wednesday to claim a third successive title.
"We are Real Madrid and while there is still a chance mathematically, we can't give in," Karanka said.
Madrid have recently suffered surprising defeats at home to both Sporting Gijon and Real Zaragoza, and Karanka believes such slip-ups must be avoided next season if the title is to return to the Bernabeu for the first time since 2008.
"We have dropped many points we couldn't have foreseen losing at all," he said.
"We can't be losing points in games in which we are the favourites."
Xabi Alonso came off early in the 6-2 win over Sevilla on Saturday, but the midfielder should be fit to face Getafe.
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo will be keen to get on the scoresheet against Getafe in his race to finish the campaign as the league's topscorer in both Spain and Europe.
Ronaldo hit four in Madrid's 6-2 win at Sevilla to take his season's tally to 46, and although that total is six less than Lionel Messi's 52, the Portuguese leads the Argentinian by 33 to 31 in the Primera Division charts.
Ronaldo will hope to become only the second player to score 50 goals in a Spanish season and can also break Hugo Sanchez's record of 38 goals in 38 league games.
While Madrid are guaranteed a second-placed finish, Getafe are still not safe from relegation.
Michel's men are just a point clear of the drop zone but the coach - a former Madrid idol as a player - believes they will stay up.
"I am still convinced we will survive," he said.
Despite the difficulty of tomorrow's game, Michel says his side will not sit back at the Bernabeu.
"We can't sit back and wait for them, we want to have the ball," he said.
"We'll go there to try and have possession - it's a tough match but we'll give it a go."
