The Latics beat Wolves 1-2 on Boxing Day thanks to goals from Hugo Rodallega and Tom Cleverley. Steven Fletcher’s late goal proved mere consolation for Wolves. The win took the Latics out of the relegation zone for the first time in months and gave manager Roberto Martinez something to smile about. Martinez will be fighting to keep Rodallega and Charles N’Zogbia at the DW Stadium in January as big clubs have been linked with the duo.

Meanwhile Newcastle sank to a 1-3 loss to Man City on Boxing Day thanks to a brace from Carlos Tevez and a goal from Gareth Barry. Andy Carroll grabbed a late consolation for the Magpies. The only good news for fans and manager Alan Pardew was that defender Steven Taylor has signed a new deal at the club. Pardew will be busy in January as he battles of big names to keep hold of Joey Barton and Andy Carroll.

Chelsea boss Carlos Ancelotti finds himself in great danger of getting sacked when his side welcomes Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Blues have been woeful of late and have failed to win any of their last six league games, their longest winless streak since 1998. Chelsea’s lack of depth has been exposed cruelly in the last few weeks with injuries to Frank Lampard and John Terry and a drop in form for both Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka. The loss in form has increased speculation that Ancelotti could be sacked unless Chelsea start to win games on a regular basis. The Italian coach refused to give up on the title hopes but said that his side should now focus their full attention on their next match rather than worry about their position in the league table.

Chelsea have a great chance of returning to winning ways when they welcome an Aston Villa side who have managed just one win from their last six games. Gerard Houllier too is feeling the pressure as his side slides down the league table and the former Liverpool coach will be hoping to secure a big result this weekend.

Arsenal will be looking to continue their push for a maiden title in five years when they travel to Birmingham this weekend.

The Gunners secured a clinical 3-1 win over champions Chelsea on Monday night. Tottenham will look to leapfrog a floundering Chelsea into the top four when they welcome Fulham this weekend.

The Spurs beat Aston Villa 1-2 over the Boxing Day to move to 30 points from 18 games; just one shy of Chelsea. Manchester City will be keen to continue with their title push as they take on Blackburn this weekend.
