Team News
Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones is out after picking up a hamstring injury in their midweek Carling Cup tie.
Matthew Upson impressive sufficiently against Spurs in midweek to be pushing for a return though Tony Pulis should recall Jonathan Woodgate.
Manchester United forwards Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck will both be pushing for starting slots alongside Wayne Rooney.
Hernandez has made a rapid recovery from the shin injury he sustained in last weekend’s win over Chelsea, while Welbeck returned from a hamstring problem in the midweek Carling Cup success at Leeds.
Chris Smalling (groin) is a doubt, but fellow England defender Rio Ferdinand is set to return from a calf injury.
Match notes
The prospect of travelling to the Britannia Stadium might bring the players of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool out in a cold sweat, but the ground billed as the most fearsome away day in the Premier League has provided three successive victory for Manchester United.
Stoke’s improvement continues apace this season, however, and United can expect their toughest test yet against Tony Pulis’s team. United’s team selection, though, may be affected by next week’s Champions League tie against Basle.
Stat of the game: United have visited Stoke three times in the Premier League and won all three.
Betting: Home 5-1, Away 4-9, Draw 14-5.
