The Republic of Ireland face a stiff test on Friday night as European giants Russia meet them in a Group B fixture at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

The Irish lead Group B with six points after winning both their qualifiers in September. Giovanni Trappatoni’s men beat Armenia 1-0 in Yerevan thanks to a late Keith Fahey goal and followed it up with a 3-1 win over Andorra in Dublin. Kevin Kilbane, Kevin Doyle and Robbie Keane were the scorers for the Republic against Andorra.

Russia began their qualification campaign with a 2-0 win over Andorra but were humbled four days later in Moscow by Slovakia. The Russians lost 1-0 at the Lokomotiv Stadium with Miroslav Stoch netting the winner for Slovakia. The trio of Andrei Arshavin, Pavel Pogrebnyak and Alan Dzagoev caused Slovakia all kinds of problems as the visitors were mostly restricted to their own half, but a resolute defensive performance saw Slovakia emerge winners.

Russia have travelled to Ireland four times in the past two decades. Both teams have won one fixture apiece, with the other two games ending in draws.
