Manchester United vs Tottenham : Preview.
The stand-out game from this weekends fixtures sees Manchester United welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford for what promises to be a thrilling encounter. At present Tottenham sit just two points behind Manchester United in the table so a win for Harry Redknapp’ side will see them leapfrog United into the top four.
A win over Manchester United would be a massive scalp for Tottenham as you have to go back twenty-one years to the last time that Tottenham defeated United at Old Trafford. From their last twenty-five matches against Manchester United, Tottenham have failed to win a single match so United have a huge psychological edge over Spurs.
Tottenham will see this as a good opportunity for a victory over Manchester United though as Sir Alex Ferguson’ side have been far from their best this season. If Harry Redknapp can get key players such as Gareth Bale, Rafael van der Vaart, Aaron Lennon and Peter Crouch playing at their very best then three points will be a distinct possibility for Tottenham.
However, despite the inconsistency from Manchester United this season and their regular lapses in defence they remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier League this season. The problem that Manchester United seem to have had this season is holding onto the lead. So far they have drawn five games this season which is already more than they had drawn throughout the whole of last seasons campaign. Tottenham will be well aware of this and they will take heart from it.
With Wayne Rooney expected to be sidelined for around a month the likely pairing up front for Manchester United will be Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez. Tottenham will have to watch out for the young lad Hernandez as he has been in fantastic form of late for United. The young striker has scored five goals in United’s last six matches.
Harry Redknapp was hoping that he would have Tom Huddlestone available for selection again but the Tottenham midfielder has failed to recover from an ankle injury in time. Redknapp has also suggested that he may elect to start Gareth Bale on the bench against Manchester United with their midweek Champions League tie in mind. Something which sounds rather bizarre to me as recently Redknapp declared that the Premier League was more important to Tottenham than the Champions League.
