Auxerre’s European campaign is in danger of suffering from a premature end unless they beat Ajax when the two teams meet in their next Champions League campaign on Wednesday.
The French side has had a disappointing group stage campaign so far, losing all of their first three games and scoring just one goal in the process. Anything less than all three points would leave Auxerre three points behind the third spot in the group table and with AC Milan and Real Madrid being the next two opponents, coach Jean Fernandez will be aware that his side’s European foray will be over for at least another season.
Ajax on the other hand will be keen to take full advantage of Milan’s difficult tie against Madrid by climbing to second in the group table by collecting all three points from the game
The Dutch giants started their Champions League campaign with a good performance in their defeat to Madrid and followed it up with a credible draw against Milan before goals from Demy De Zeeuw and Luis Suarez helped them secure all three points from a fiery encounter against Auxerre.
Ajax will be without Andre Ooijer who was sent off against Auxerre in the last match while the French side will be without Dennis Oliech and Jean-Pascal Mignot who had also received their marching order.
